Whitby Bank Holiday Walking and Social Weekend

Overview

This walking weekend with Steve Dell will appeal to both social walkers who want shorter walks and more serious walkers who want longer and more moderate walks. There is a great variety of walking with this weekend; from wooded valleys to open moorland and from stunning coastal scenery to pretty villages.

The walks are easy to moderate, as some will have more gradients than usual with Steve, which gives the area its wonderful scenery, but we will take our time and admire the stunning scenery! Each day there will be a walk followed by the opportunity to spend time looking around the local area

There is also plenty to do for non walkers or if you want to mix n match walking with social / tourist stuff.

Whitby is wonderful fishing town with so much history and there is plenty to do even if your reason to go isn’t walking, including a picturesque port, an ancient Abbey, Captain Cook museum, cobbled streets and Dracula!

Variations:

  • The walking programme
  • Saturday – Today we walk from Goathland, made famous as Aidensfield in Heartbeat. The morning walk will be around 5 miles and initially visits Mallyan Spout, an impressive 90 foot waterfall. Then we walk to Grosmont following a lovely beck along a disused railway line. We stop in Grosmont, a lovely town, to have our packed lunch.
  • After lunch you may want to continue and walk back to Goathland, making it a full day’s ramble or you could catch the steam train back to Goathland. The return route is on the opposite side of the valley following the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as it winds its way through the countryside. We initially walk trough some pretty woods, which should have a super display of Bluebells and then into moor land and finally back to Goathland.
  • Whether you opt to the half or full day ramble you will have time for a drink in the ‘Aidensfield Arms’.
  • Sunday – To save using our cars we will walk from the hotel today to Robin Hoods Bay a ‘must see’ pretty coastal fishing village. The walk is around 7½ miles and has some stunning coastal scenery with the reward of pubs and tea shops at the end! The walk is around 8 miles.
  • Monday - The final days walking will take us onto the moors and the famous ‘Hole of Horcum’, which is a huge natural hollow 400ft deep. Legend has it that it is an amphitheatre scooped out by a giant! You get some wonderful views of the moors on this walk. This walk is around 6½ miles.
